Playa Pawn
The Con
Playa Pawn looked like a pawn shop. We had merch in the cases, junk on the shelves, the whole bit. But nobody was actually buying or selling anything. The shop was the set dressing. The real operation was something else entirely.
We were a playa name granting camp — disguised as a pawn shop.
Our mission: find the people wandering Black Rock City without a playa name and give them one so good it would stick. Not a throwaway. Not a joke that gets old by Wednesday. A name — with a story behind it, earned through an experience they'd actually remember.
The Methods
We spent all summer before the burn coming up with hundreds of playa names — hilarious, weird, oddly profound — and printed them on cards. But we never just handed someone a name. That's not how names work. You have to earn it. You have to have a story. So we built the stories.
The Plinko Board
A to-scale Plinko board, built from scratch. Drop the disc, watch it bounce, and whatever slot it lands in — that's your name. The randomness made it feel like fate. People lost their minds.
The Naming Shaman
Jeff, in full regalia, channeling the spirits of the playa to divine your true dust name. A ceremony. An experience. Completely made up and absolutely sacred.
The Grifts
Games, cons, bits, and schemes — all designed to pull people into a moment, make them laugh, make them play along, and walk away with a name that had a story attached to it.
The Mission
At the end of every naming — after the bit, after the laughs, after the name card was handed over — came the real moment. A hug. A thank you for being a good sport. And then the why.
A playa name isn't just a nickname. It's permission to be someone you haven't been yet. It's a fresh start in a place that runs on reinvention. Some people come out here for years and never get one, and that felt like something we could fix.
That was the whole point. The pawn shop, the Plinko board, the shaman outfit — all of it existed to create a moment where a stranger could become someone new. And mean it.
Two Seasons
2023 — Grand Opening
The inaugural season. We figured out the formula: the shop pulls them in, the games keep them playing, and the name sends them home different. Hundreds of names granted.
2024 — Under New Management
Returned with more names, more games, and a refined con. The Naming Shaman became legendary. The Plinko board got an upgrade. We got better at reading people and matching them with names that actually fit.
